Here’s the Challenge
Create a quick-turnaround Concept Sketch that addresses the following considerations:
Temporary
Low-cost (installation budget of $30K to $100K)
Addresses the needs of food service, retail, and other service industries
Situated outdoors in public space (i.e. the sidewalk, closed streets, parking spaces, vacant lots, parking lots)
People-focused
Supports the safety of users
Considers a range of users and groups and supports their safe interaction
Prioritize durable, reusable, and sustainable materials and construction methods
Adheres, to the greatest extent possible, to current public health best practices outlined below
Follows ADA accessibility guidelines
Adaptable to different communities, through community involvement
How to Participate
Please create 1 primary sketch, with up to 3 supporting sketches and accompanied by 150 words of explanatory text, that present a design solution for one or more of the following spatial challenges:
Outdoor dining
Outdoor services (hair cuts, salons, healthcare)
Outdoor retail (clothing, home goods, books, etc.)
Outdoor entertainment (movie screenings, performances, lectures, dance parties etc.)
While we aren’t providing specific sites, sketches should be situated in the public spaces of commercial areas and designed to serve a multitude of businesses.
